Sirius plc acquires remaining 49% of Dakota Salts llc
Monday, 19 January 2009 00:00
Sirius Plc (“Sirius” or “the Company”) announces that it has acquired the remaining 49% ordinary shares in Dakota Salts LLC (“Dakota Salts”) from Transparent Holdings Ltd. (“Transparent Holdings”).
Information on Dakota Salts
Dakota Salts LLC, a privately held Company incorporated in Colorado and based in Denver, USA, holds mineral leases in excess of 5,000 acres in North Dakota, USA, allowing for the exploration and extraction of salt and potash and the creation of caverns for the storage of natural gas and other hydrocarbons or the storage of compressed air for electricity generation.
Dakota Salts has not traded and has published no Accounts. A valuation or competent person’s report is not required for this transaction. Following the acquisition of the controlling interest by Sirius, the Company is to commission a report on the storage cavern and mineral potential.
North Dakota is the base of one of the largest wind farm, electricity generation projects in North America with capital investment to expected to exceed $4 billion, President-elect Obama has stated his commitment not only to renewable energy but also to connecting these wind farms into the grid to supply Chicago with power. Wind power is one of the most environmentally friendly sources of power but does not provide a consistent output since power is only generated when wind is blowing. This can lead to complex power management issues which can be resolved by compressed air storage and subsequent release, powering turbines thereby allowing electricity to be available to meet demand when required.
Sirius believes that there is considerable potential in using the Dakota Salts acreage to create salt caverns to store electricity by means of compressed air. This is established technology and, in addition to electricity revenues, industry experts have advised the project would also generate substantial carbon credits.
Reasons for the Acquisition
The transaction provides Sirius with a controlling investment in a company which the Directors of Sirius believe has major potential to become a substantial participant in the lucrative energy storage field. It also has the potential to establish a conventional salt and potash mining operation.
Background on Sirius
Sirius is quoted on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in London and is also planning to have its shares traded in North America through the use of an ADR facility. Sirius currently has secured copper and gold interests in Macedonia and a royalty interest in a tungsten mine in China.
Richard Poulden, the Chairman of Sirius, commented:
“The acquisition of the 51% stake in Dakota Salts is in line with our plans to create an international mining exploration company investing in areas of the world where the directors believe there are significant growth opportunities.
We believe that the demand for energy storage will increase worldwide and particularly in the United States. We also believe that international demand for conventional salt and potash will continue to grow and that our holding in Dakota Salts will provide an excellent return on investment to the benefit of shareholders.”
Competent Person’s Statement
The technical information contained in this announcement has been reviewed and approved by Nick Badham, Managing Director of Sirius, a qualified competent person in Europe and North America who is also a Chartered European Geologist having had almost 40 years relevant experience in the mining industry.
